ARISE Research Group

Advanced Research and Innovation for Sustainable Environment (ARISE)

A multidisciplinary research group led by Dr. Abhisek Roy, Department of Civil Engineering, Jadavpur University, dedicated to advancing sustainable environmental engineering through innovative research in water, wastewater, environmental modelling, geospatial analysis, public health, and smart infrastructure.

Current Research Scholars & Alumni

1) Dr. Bhaskar Sengupta

Dr. Bhaskar Sengupta was the first Ph.D. scholar supervised by Dr. Abhisek Roy. His research contributed to establishing the foundation of the ARISE Research Group.

2) Mr. Mainak Maiti

Mr. Mainak Maiti joined the ARISE Research Group as a Research Scholar under the supervision of Dr. Abhisek Roy in August 2022. His research focuses on the application of advanced biological wastewater treatment technologies for the treatment of wastewater generated from wet markets, particularly those prevalent in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. His work aims to develop sustainable and efficient treatment solutions for decentralized wastewater management.

Mr. Maiti has authored two book chapters published by Springer Nature and one research article in the journal Progress in Engineering Science published by Elsevier. He has also actively collaborated with the University of Wyoming on research investigating the spatial and temporal variation of water quality in the East Kolkata Wetlands under the guidance of Dr. Abhisek Roy. He has presented his research at five international conferences and one national conference.

He completed his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University and obtained his Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur.

3) Ms. Debangshi Das

Ms. Debangshi Das joined the Department of Civil Engineering, Jadavpur University, as a WBDST Project Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Abhisek Roy in November 2024. She registered as a Ph.D. scholar in February 2026 and is currently pursuing her doctoral research under Dr. Roy’s guidance. Her research focuses on the performance evaluation and modelling of hybrid space-saving Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) systems for urban wastewater treatment, urban drainage canal remediation, decentralized wastewater treatment, biofilm reactor technology, water quality assessment, and environmental modelling. She has published SCI-indexed research papers and actively participates in national and international conferences. Her work integrates laboratory experimentation, field investigations, and computational modelling to develop sustainable and efficient treatment technologies for polluted urban water bodies. Her research interests include biological wastewater treatment, water quality monitoring and modelling, environmental biotechnology and sustainable environmental engineering.

4) Ms. Poulami Nandi

Ms. Poulami Nandi is a DST INSPIRE Fellow and Senior Research Scholar. She began working under Dr. Abhisek Roy as a Junior Research Fellow in 2023. Her research interests include Environmental Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Geospatial Analysis, with applications in environmental health and sustainable development.

5) Mr. Munsi Izaz Refaz

Mr. Munsi Izaz Refaz worked as a Project Associate in the Global Change Programme, Jadavpur University, from August 2024 to November 2025 under the supervision of Dr. Abhisek Roy. During this period, he was actively involved in several environmental monitoring, assessment, and consultancy projects across diverse industrial sectors. His work included air, water, and soil quality monitoring, environmental sampling and testing, and environmental compliance studies.

He contributed to consultancy projects involving Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), solid waste management, waste diversion modelling, legacy landfill waste mitigation, wastewater treatment technologies, water quality analysis, and sustainability assessment. His research interests also include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), GIS-based spatial analysis and mapping, mathematical modelling, and circular economy approaches for sustainable resource management.

Currently, Mr. Refaz is pursuing his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. Brajesh K. Dubey in the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, where his research continues to focus on sustainable environmental engineering and resource management.
